Work PLACE Workshop Readiness Checklists

Use these checklists to make sure you're fully prepared to attend and benefit from a Work PLACE entrepreneurship workshop.

On the Day of the Workshop

    • Allows time for sign-in, finding your seat, and meeting staff or other attendees

    • For workshop access, Wi-Fi login, or borrowing materials

    • No library card? No worries no need to have one to attend.

    • Bring a fully charged phone, tablet, or laptop if you plan to take notes or work digitally

    • Ask questions, take notes, and join in any hands-on activities

    • Respect others’ ideas and time

    • If you need personalized help after the workshop, staff can schedule a private consultation with you on Mondays or Fridays.

Before the Workshop/ meeting

    • If you don’t have one, visit your local branch or sign up online: https://www.elpasolibrary.org

    • Cant get one? No worries or services can still be used.

    • Check your email or text for workshop details

    • Write down or screenshot directions to The Literacy Center

    • Plan your transportation ahead of time

    • Are you looking to start a business, get help with a plan, or learn a skill (e.g., marketing, budgeting)?

    • Bring your questions or ideas with you!

    • Pen/pencil & notebook

    • Any existing business plans or notes

    • USB drive or cloud access (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc.) if you have digital files

    • Valid photo ID (optional but helpful)

After the Workshop

    • Summarize key points or action steps in your notebook

    • Make a to-do list if you plan to apply the knowledge right away

    • Reach out with any questions

    • Ask for help applying for business licenses, developing plans, or finding funding

    • Sign up for future workshop alerts or join The Literacy Center’s email list

    • Visit the library for books, digital resources, and continued support

Simple Steps: How to Get Started with Work PLACE

Work PLACE is a free program at the Main Library - Literacy Center that helps you start your own business, grow your ideas, and learn useful skills. Need Help or Have Questions?We’re here for you. Text, call, or email any time!

  • You’ll need a free El Paso Public Library card. Go to any library or apply online: elpasolibrary.org

    Cant get one? Dont worry, you can still stop by for services!

  • Choose a topic that fits your goal (like planning a business, marketing, or designing a logo). You can also meet one-on-one with staff for help with your idea.

  • Workshops are fun, hands-on, and easy to follow. Bring a notebook, your phone or laptop, and any ideas you already have. Don’t worry if you’re starting from scratch β€” that’s okay!

  • After your first session, you can:

    βœ… Learn how to apply for a grant or license
    βœ… Use library tools to work on your project

  • Work PLACE (Public Literacy Access for Careers & Entrepreneurship) is a free program offered through the El Paso Public Library Literacy Center that helps individuals develop small businesses, learn digital and career skills, and access one-on-one support for economic self-sufficiency.

  • Any adult (18+) living in the El Paso area who is interested in entrepreneurship, career development, or improving digital and business skills can participate. A valid El Paso Public Library card is recommended but not needed.

  • No. All workshops, resources, and one-on-one sessions are free of charge.

  • Support includes business planning, marketing, budgeting, applying for licenses or grants, web design, digital literacy, and more. Participants can also access equipment and tech support.

  • No. You can join whether you’re just exploring an idea or already running a small business. Staff will help you at any stage.

  • Many workshops are offered in English, and some are bilingual. Staff can also provide support in Spanish as needed.

  • Yes! The program supports all types of businesses, including online stores, food vendors, service-based businesses, and more.

  • While there is no formal certification, participants receive ongoing support, resources, and letters of completion for certain workshops if needed.

  • Yes. The library offers computers, internet access, printers, and other tools. Staff can also help you use design software or online business platforms.

  • Bring your ideas, notes, and any documents related to your business (if applicable). A notebook, USB, and charged device are helpful.

  • Yes. Immigration status does not affect eligibility. The program is open to all community members.

  • Staff can schedule follow-up appointments to continue working with you on your goals. Ongoing mentorship and resource referrals are available.

  • Adults may participate with family support, and older teens (17+) may be eligible with a parent or guardian’s permission. Workshops are adult-focused but inclusive.

  • Partners can refer clients by contacting the Literacy Center directly, sharing program materials, or arranging group info sessions for their organization.
